Hello and welcome to my site! My name is James Williams, woodworker, owner, bookkeeper, webmaster, and janitor here at my home woodshop. Throughout my life, I've had a love of truly handcrafted goods, which has led me on a unique journey from musician and composer, to historical tailor, and eventually here to the world of traditional woodworking.
Have you ever looked at some very old woodworking and marveled at the beauty in the hand-cut joinery, carefully shaped pieces, and beautifully-carved details? I immediately think of the great cathedrals in Europe, or perhaps more simply the Shakers and their humble but amazing work. And what makes it all the more fascinating is how it was all done by hand. We've got all these machines at our disposal today but almost nothing to compare with the work that was done in ages past. Who were these craftsman who put their blood, sweat, love, and their very soul into their work as they carved and crafted their way to making a living?
And so it is today that I hope to continue in some small way in their footsteps, as I craft my pieces entirely by hand in my little workshop. There's something so satisfying about taking a piece of wood, making a few well-placed cuts, shaping here and there with the spokeshave and plane, until the finished product comes together, brought out of what was previously a rough piece of wood. And then to think about where that wood came from. What did the tree look like? Which little creatures made their homes in the branches or trunk of the tree? Who rested under its shade during the life of the tree? So many things to ponder as one crafts a piece, and even better, as one such as yourself or your loved one uses such a piece in their daily life, to be passed on to the next generation when the time comes.
I so hope that you will enjoy my handmade items for many years to come and that they will give you great joy each time you use them. It is so wonderful to hold, for example, a hand-carved wooden utensil in your hand as you cook for your family or self, and experience the shape of the handle as it rests perfectly in your hands, or the way the light reflects off a perfectly smooth piece of hardwood furniture in your home, showing the growth rings in such depth and detail.
